How this was made

The atlas starts from one point: the family's coordinates, 14.8633939 N, 74.2260639 E, on Kinnar Road beside Siddar in Karwar taluk. Every dataset was asked the same question. What is the oldest public record that reaches this point, and what does it say?

The history chapters

Seven chapters (who ruled the river, temples and festivals, work and food, nature, a hundred years of change, how many people lived here, and what visitors wrote) draw on the 1883 Bombay Gazetteer for Kanara, the District Census Handbooks from 1951 to 2011, the 1978 CMFRI clam survey, recent studies of the Kali estuary's mangroves and clams, GBIF wildlife records, travellers' accounts by Fryer (1675), Hamilton (1727) and Buchanan (1801), Tagore's My Reminiscences (1917), and reports in The Hindu, Deccan Herald and The New Indian Express. Each item on the page says whether it comes from old records, from books and news reports, or from what people say, and links to its source. The full list is in the repository's docs/sources/ folder.

What the data cannot say

Languages

The page reads in English, Kannada, Konkani (in Devanagari) and Marathi. The translations were drafted by machine and have not yet been checked by native speakers, so place names and a few technical words may be off. Quotes from the 1883 and 1908 gazetteers stay in their original English. Corrections go in site/i18n/, one file per language.
